Smart gloves(Wearble) for gesture recognition: MIT Media Lab workshop prototype
Gesture recognition • Smart fabrics •Gloves made by using smart fabrics to detect gestures
I was fortunate to participate in MIT Media Lab's Design and innovation workshop(2014) held in Mumbai. This workshop taught me a lot about brainstorming and making a good prototype addressing users' needs.
A team of four members and I created a smart glove to identify hand gestures and make quick actions. At the time of need, a quick call to 911 or related services could save lives. The underlying idea is that some fabrics change their resistance when stretched. We used this property of the material to track the user's gestures. We knitted the fabric into a glove, and it could discern between different hand gestures. Potential applications include emergency calls, Human-Computer Interactions and others.
